Home is Wherever I’m With You

I had this song stuck in my head ALL day.

I was in a very Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros kind of mood today (minus the psychedelic drugs).

Maybe it was my kitten heel leopard print pumps.

When I got home I played the song for AJH and she was equally excited.

I really think she would have jumped right out of her boppy and danced around the room if she could have.

After singing it with her, I listened to the words and had another “High Tide or Low Tide” moment.

We laugh until we think we’ll die,
Barefoot on a summer night
Nothin’ new is sweeter than with you

How pretty?
I was suddenly reminded of my love for all “home-themed” songs. From Van Morrison’s, “And it Stoned Me” (“…just like going home”) and Toots and the Maytal’s version of “Country Roads” (Take Me Home) to Sam Cooke’s, “Bring it on Home to Me,” and Robert Earl Keen’s, “I’m Coming Home.” As I type this I just happen to be listening to Ralph Stanley’s high-pitched voice wailing, “There’s a place I long to be, a place that I call home, a place where I was born and raised, a place I call my own.”
What is it about these songs that will always drawn me in?
Maybe it’s the longing for that lovely, comfortable, beautiful place that they evoke.
Maybe it’s the fact that we’re all on a constant quest to find a place to call our own.
(Just ask my dear friend, Valerie, who is now filled with complete gratitude after months and months of waiting for her perfect little spot on this earth to be ready for her to arrive with the one she loves.)
Maybe it’s the lingering wonder in the back of my mind if I will ever really feel at home.
As I sang with my daughter today, I think I may have found the answer hidden in the words of that crazy, happy, wonderful song…

Ahh home, let me come home
Home is whenever I’m with you

Ahh home. Yes I am ho-oh-ome.
