Fall Fashion…Navy is My New Neutral

I never used to be a huge fan of navy blue. It always reminded me of some sort of work uniform…until now. Navy is not so boring when paired with fun colors like chartreuse and turquoise. Not as harsh as black, and more slimming than white, I think I’ve found my new neutral!

Option One:

Navy blue wrap top, Target

Turquoise cords, Target

Necklace, South Moon Under

Bracelet, Vintage

Regina Ballet Flat in Cognac, Frye

Option Two:

Switch out the wrap top for a navy blue tank top, Old Navy

Option One:

Navy floral print top, TJ Maxx

Chartreuse Cords, Target

Option Two:

Navy/white button-down, J. Crew

Fall Fashion…Urban Vintage?

I’m what you call a “stay-at-home-slash-work-at-home-mom.” I try to fit a full-time job as a Marketing and Social Media director for a local jewelry store into two days of work from home while the kids go to a babysitter. On those days I try wear what I call “real clothes,” especially if I’m going to be out in public. Real Clothes=not yoga pants. Because my size has fluctuated post-baby I had to buy a few pair of new pants (including these) and have been pretty excited about trying them out.  After almost a year of maternity clothes, it’s kind of nice wearing things that don’t involve some sort of stretch (sometimes ;) )

This morning I came out in this outfit and as I was inspecting it in the mirror my hubby said, “Ohh, you’re looking very…urban…vintage today.”

What?!

I know he had no idea what urban vintage really meant and was just saying it because he knew I would love it and that it was probably exactly the look I was going for.

And he was right.

Urban vintage is probably somewhat accurate to my style, or at least the style I aim for.

Plus, it reminds me of Urban Cowboy, one of my favorite movies of all time.

So here is my “urban vintage” look. Something casual and comfortable for a day of work and running errands.

Oatmeal tank top, Old Navy

Lace trimmed cardigan, T.J. Maxx

Skinny jeans, Target

Regina Ballet Flat in Cognac, Frye

Do you have a name for your style, or for the style you aim for?

Fall Fashions…Bright Skinnies

I felt super cool today.

I had no idea how timely it would be for me to break out my new chartreuse skinny cords from Target until I saw that the bright color was all the rage last night at the Emmy’s.

Claire DanesJulianne Moore and Julie Bowen

I have been dying to have some bright colored skinnies and I didn’t want to spend a lot of money so I was thrilled to see that Target had a whole slew of fun-colored pants in their latest selection. It just so happened that the only ones in my post-pregnancy size were in chartreuse. It wasn’t my first choice, but they’re definitely starting to grow on me!

Navy-blue wrap top, Merona, Target

Navy-blue/white blazer, T.J. Maxx

Chartreuse Cords, Mossimo Supply Co.,  Target

Regina Ballet Flat in Cognac, Frye

Turquoise/Green/Yellow Necklace, gift from South Moon Under

Have you bought into the bright colored skinny pant trend?

How do you feel about chartreuse?

Maternity Fashion

Dressing a baby bump can actually be fun sometimes!

(though you may not think that if you saw the blue, men’s tee shirt and un-matching blue and Hawaiian print pajama pants I am wearing right now).

Here is one of my favorite recent outfits…

(Excuse my creepy lack of  eye contact).

This is an old, black shirt from T.J. Maxx tucked into a vintage skirt from my favorite antique store paired with some old flats from Gap. This has always been one of my favorite skirts and I’m glad I could get some wear out of it during the pregnancy.

You can follow some of my favorite maternity fashions on Pinterest here.

Fall Fashion Picks–2011

I was recently asked by BlogHer to answer a question for their Life Well Lived Looking Your Best series. Check out the BlogHer expert post, from one of my favorite fashion bloggers, …love Maegan, where I left a comment with some of my thoughts on Maegan’s choices.
Here are my full answers for the million dollar question:

What are your Fall must-have fashion picks?

1.  A great pair of neutral flats. I am currently lusting after the Frye Regina or Carson ballet flat because I love all things leather, especially when it comes to Frye. They’re perfect for transitioning from weather that’s too cold for sandals and too hot for boots. I love the worn in look of the camel leather, which will surely coordinate with all of the autumnal hues in your wardrobe.

2. A slightly cropped straight or skinny jean. Speaking of great flats, a great cropped jean is the perfect companion for crisp fall days. I have been on the search for the PERFECT cropped skinny jean, and have heard from one of my fashion gurus, Possessionista, that the J Brand is the best. Here is Duchess Kate Middleton wearing the J Brand 811 ‘Olympia’ skinny jeans… and we all know you can’t go wrong with Kate.

3. A fabulous leather boot. For days that are downright chilly, your skinny jeans can double as the perfect jean to tuck into your go-to leather boot. As I mentioned, I love all things Frye, so I recommend the Harness boot for it’s awesome ability to go with everything and funk up any outfit with a cool rocker vibe. I also love the Jane Stitching Horse because the impeccable leather gives a dressy feel, yet the stitching keeps it rustic.

4. A super-flared jean. I’ve always loved seventies fashion, and this fall I am specifically loving a Dazed and Confused, Three’s Company look and it all starts with a great flare. If you want to be extra daring, make them high-waisted! While it may not be for everyone, I think it gives an extra seventies vibe. I love Zoe Saldana’s cool, casual look in these Black Orchid flare jeans. If you’re in the market for a Look for Less, try these Hi-Rise Retro Flare jeans from Old Navy.

5. A colorful cardigan. My current love is this one by Flying Tomato which I purchased at one of my favorite local boutiques, The Yellow Button. The bright colors are perfect for adding a pop of color to any outfit and it’s so cozy and soft!

6. Something Lacy. This list would not be complete without my first love: lace. I have a special place in my closet for all of my lace covered tops, skirts and sweaters and I must admit, it is getting embarrassingly large. I love the vintage feel and am happy to see that it’s still a trend and popping up all over my favorite catalogs. The Ruth tunic dress from none other than Fossil has intricate lace detailing making the feminine piece versatile and flattering for both day and night.

Today I’m going to link up again with “Fabulous But Evil” for Target Tuesday!

This fun bloggy game is a place to list all of the fabulous things we want/have from Target.

I couldn’t pass it up this week because I have (once again) recently made some great finds at our local “Tar-jay.”

Most of my finds were for the wee one.
Genuine Kids from OshKosh™ Infant Toddler Girls’ Outerwear Light-Weight Trench Coat in Tan :

Purchased by her Mamaw Sandy

Circo Jannie TG Boot in Berry:

These will look so cute with her black skinny jeans.

As seen together here while doing her best “America’s Next Top Model” pose:

Toddler Girls’ Cherokee® Jenna Suede Boots in Pink:

 I love those suede laces!

I also found all of these items today and many were on clearance or under $5:

I love the “jeggings” and aqua tutu skirt.

And for momma:

Mossimo Supply Co. Juniors Sleeveless Dress

I love the country feel of this pattern.

Target Tuesday #1

Today I’m going to link up with “Fabulous But Evil” for Target Tuesday!
This fun bloggy game is a place to list all of the fabulous things we want/have from Target.
I couldn’t pass it up this week because I have recently made some great finds at our local “Tar-jay.”
My first find is this Xhilaration Spaghetti Strap Scoop Neck Dress in a fun Turquoise Print.

I wore it to the Homegrown Market at Staunton Plant Company where I set up on Fridays and do my hair feathers! I love the print, and…it has pockets! Score!

My next find, are these amazingly soft shirts. I AM OBSESSED. For only $12.99, shirts this soft are a fab. find. I can’t find a good pic. online, so here is one from my camera phone.

These are my two fav. colors right now: lime-y green and, of course, aqua!

Finally, I loved the vintage look of this Merona belt.
It really cinches the waist and the leather has a very rich look.

I hope you enjoyed my finds! Now, link up with Fabulous But Evil and share your own goodies!

Beautiful Things: Sundance

*I have been drafting this post for weeks and since I have been super-busy lately with finishing the yearbook at school and haven’t had time to blog, I will just go ahead and publish. Enjoy!

I kinda wanted to start this post with “sh*$ I want,” but since the in-laws are readers, I thought I’d keep it tame ;)

So I realize it’s a “sin” to be ill with want.
Been there, written that.
I realize I don’t NEED any of this stuff.
But I also realize I shouldn’t have to put a disclaimer on blog posts to make myself feel less guilty.
Hi, my name is PJH and I love beautiful things.
Whaddaya know?
It’s no secret that I like to shop and have a lot of things I don’t really need, persay. But it doesn’t stop me from

coveting

them.
As evil and “sinful” as it may be.
Here are a few beautiful things I am WANTING right now.
So, shoot me.
Sundance Stuff: I learned about this site from a blog I follow, a room somewhere (who does a “What I Wore Wednesday” post full of her Anthropologie meets Old Navy wardrobe, which I love). She featured this crochet skirt and I die…
This look, however “in” it may be right now, will never be “out” for me. I love the skirt, the boots, the cardigan, the belt…the whole thing screams “my utopia in the mountains” which I love.
The site has a whole section called “Everything Frye.”
Ahhh. Heaven for this sister.
If only I could afford “everything Frye” and all would be right in my own little bubble of fashion.
I will take these please:
That’s all for now, but I am sure there will be more to come soon from this Shopgirl.

The power of a dress

First, thank you for all of the love and support after Friday’s post. It was hard to write but I needed to do it. I find healing through not only writing, but through sharing and connecting with others. A lot of my feelings of grief seemed to hit yesterday morning, which I expected with it being Mother’s Day. I just felt all around sad. It was really nice having my sister in town, who talked me through everything and helped me get from Point A (sad, unmotivated and BLAH) to Point B (positive, motivated and DOLLED UP).

I had a baby shower to attend and though I was nervous I might have a sob-fest in the middle of all the talk of babies and pregnancy, I thought really hard about it and suddenly my attitude changed. I realized that if anything could make me feel better about my current situation, celebrating a new life was it. How could I wallow in the misery of losing my pregnancy when a close friend was blessed with the  miracle of becoming a mother (and it truly is a miracle)? The shower was lovely and fun and it felt good to get out and see close friends on a very special day. My sister “styled me” to a T and I wish I could hire her to be my very own Rachel Zoe. We pulled out my inner Charlotte from Sex and the City with this outfit, and I couldn’t help but think of the episode in which she suffers from a miscarriage and finds the thestrength to attend Brady’s first birthday party after watching the E! “True Hollywood Story of Elizabeth Taylor.” Dressing like the legendary fashion icon gave her the oomph she needed to get out of bed and get her groove back!
My sis, T. has a knack for fashion and we have grand plans with our soul sister to make some of these dreams come true….stay tuned!
Here are the details on my outfit:
